AXA Ladies Golf Tournament--Momoko grasps victory!
Congratulations, Momoko!
Momoko Ueda won in a one-hole, sudden-death playoff at the AXA Ladies Golf Tournament (Hokkaido, Japan; August 7-9) on the LPGA of Japan tour.
After playing the 54 holes of regulation, Ueda (68-69-68) shared the lead with Chie Arimura (68-70-67) and JiHee Lee (66-71-68) at 11-under-par 205, who already won two and one tournaments on the LPGA of Japan tour this season respectively.
On the first hole of the sudden-death playoff, Arimura made a bogey to drop off the competition.
On the second hole, Lee's tee shot found the fairway, while Ueda ended up in the right rough. However, Ueda's second shot was so tremendous that her ball hit the pin, but she barely missed a chip-in eagle. Afterwards, Ueda sank it for the birdie and the win.
It was crunch time on the last three holes in the final round. With a five-way tie for the lead at 10-under-par, Ueda and Lee made a birdie on the 17th hole and Arimura did on the 18th hole to go to the 18th tee box again for the playoff.
“I was mentally stable during the three rounds,” Ueda said, pondering what gave her the first victory this year.
